The structure of the academy is drawn from what Hein feels are the strengths of other art training institutions. Like the 19th century ateliers, each student is given a personal work area to which they have regular access. They are given assignments, such as still life, cast drawing (painting), and painting and drawing from live models, all designed to build technical skills, as well as assignments that will challenge them creatively. The total enrollment is only 10 students. This is important because it allows the teacher to get deeply involved in each individual student’s education.
At $320 per month, the academy is extremely affordable in order to allow students to devote the maximum amount of time to building their education without going into debt, which will give each artist more financial freedom to take the necessary risks associated with the difficult field of a fine artist.
